Some news from our Transition neighbours in Ottery St Mary…
SUSTAINABLE OTTERY’S COMMUNITY MARKET IS ON SATURDAY 15TH DECEMBER FROM 9.30 – 12.30 AT THE INSTITUTE IN YONDER STREET
Last minute Christmas shopping is a good reason to visit Sustainable Ottery’s Community Market on 15 December, 9.30am – 12.30pm at The Institute in Yonder Street. Market shoppers will reduce their food miles and ensure that their money stays in the local economy, as well as having a great range of local produce and crafts to choose from. Penny Hounslow, one of the organisers, agrees and adds, ‘There is such a brilliant atmosphere on the morning; it makes shopping fun again. And you can buy unique, one-off items that make fabulous gifts and produce that couldn’t be fresher!”. Again there will a full house of stalls, selling a wide variety of products from knitted items to local preserves and chutneys, fresh vegetables to home-made cakes, wooden toys to works of art, Christmas decorations to home made soap, jewellery to one-of-a-kind cards; and more, something for every one. The WI will be serving up Christmas refreshments so shoppers can also unwind and soak up the atmosphere.
It’s over four and half years since Sustainable Ottery’s Diana Jones thought it would be a great idea to start a community market and it’s gone from strength-to-strength. However, in the spirit of sustainability and according to Transition Town ethos, we are encouraged to set-up initiatives then hand them over the community to run. So Sustainable Ottery have asked the United Reform Church to run the market from 2013 which they have happily agreed to do. We trust that the market will continue to thrive. Please contact Penny Hounslow directly if you have any queries or want to book a table. Penny’s phone number is 01404 814632, email is firstname.lastname@example.org or you can still make enquiries via our e-mail address email@example.com . Many, many thanks to Beatrix Godfrey from Sustainable Ottery who has for the past four and a half years given up one Saturday every month, along with her husband Ian and a small band of supporters, including Penny, to help promote, set-up and run this wonderful venture. We hope that Beatrix will enjoy a few more lie-ins in 2013.
